Signs to Look for When Seeking Professional Help for You or a Loved One

Taking care of one’s health is one of the most important things someone can do for themselves. Are you or someone you know struggling with emotional difficulties, life challenges, or mental health concerns? It may be time to seek professional help. At La Familia del Paso, we offer services for mental/behavioral health as well as primary care services. Mental Health conditions are common. Recent statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Health show 1 out of every 5 American adults lives with a mental health condition, while 1 in 25 adults lives with a serious mental health condition.

If a mental health condition goes untreated, it could lead to more severe problems such as:

  • An inability to attend social functions (ex. school, work)

  • Difficulty developing well-functioning relationships

  • Suicide

  • Increase in physical and mental health issues

According to the American Psychological Association, there are two general guidelines when considering whether you or someone you love could benefit from professional services.

The first being, is the problem you or your loved one experiencing distressing?

  • Do you or someone close to you spend some amount of time every week thinking about the problem?

  • Over the past few months, has the problem reduced you or your loved one’s quality of life?

  • Do you feel as if your symptoms are controlling you or putting you or others at risk of harm?

  • Do you feel overwhelmed consistently with daily roles or activities?

And second, is it interfering with some or all aspects in your life?

  • Does the problem take up considerable time (more than an hour per day)?

  • Have you cut down on your work or educational ambitions because of the problem?

  • Are you rearranging your lifestyle to accommodate the problem?

  • Do you persistently feel hopeless, or feeling as if you have no future?

Answering yes to any of these questions could indicate it is time to seek professional help. At La Familia del Paso, our services are curated to each individual’s personal needs. Our services are for both children and adults.
